نظرًا لأن الموسيقى هي محور العديد من ثقافات العالم ، تثار أسئلة حول كيفية تشكيل التعرض الثقافي، حتى في حالة عدم وجود تدريب رسمي واضح، إستجاباتنا تجاه الموسيقى.
وجد أن المستمعين كانوا قادرين على استخدام الإشارات الصوتية مثل الإيقاع والجهارة للتعرف على تعبيرات الفرح والغضب والحزن في الموسيقى من ثقافتهم الخاصة وكذلك الموسيقى من ثقافتين غير مألوفين ، مما يشير إلى أن بعض جوانب الاستجابات العاطفية للموسيقى لا تعتمد على التعرض المسبق.

As music is a centerpiece of many world cultures, questions arise as to how cultural exposure, even in the absence of explicit formal training, shapes our responses to music. Additionally, individuals' musical memory abilities are greater for culturally familiar music than for culturally unfamiliar music. The sum of these effects makes culture a powerful influence in music cognition.
Found that listeners were able to use acoustic cues such as tempo and loudness to recognize expressions of joy, anger, and sadness in music from their own culture as well as music from two unfamiliar cultures, suggesting that some aspects of affective responses to music do not depend on prior exposure.
